چکیده

We prove a general identity for a 3F2 hypergeometric function over a finite field Fq, where q is a power of an odd prime. A special case of this identity was proved by Greene and Stanton in 1986. As an application, we prove a finite field analogue of Clausen’s Theorem expressing a 3F2 as the square of a 2F1. As another application, we evaluate an infinite family of 3F2(z) over Fq at z = −1/8. This extends a result of Ono, who evaluated one of these 3F2(−1/8) in 1998, using elliptic curves.

Transformations of well-poised hypergeometric functions over finite fields

We define a hypergeometric function over finite fields which is an analogue of the classical generalized hypergeometric series. We prove that this function satisfies many transformation and summation formulas. Some of these results are analogous to those given by Dixon, Kummer and Whipple for the well-poised classical series. We also discuss this function’s relationship to other finite field an...

Transcendence in Positive Characteristic and Special Values of Hypergeometric Functions

We prove a simple transcendence criterion suitable for function field arithmetic. We apply it to show the transcendence of special values at non-zero rational arguments (or more generally, at algebraic arguments which generate extension of the rational function field with less than q places at infinity) of the entire hypergeometric functions in the function field (over Fq) context, and to obtai...

G2 and hypergeometric sheaves

We determine, in every finite characteristic p, those hypergeometric sheaves of type (7,m) with 7 ≥ m whose geometric monodromy group Ggeom lies in G2, cf. Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 6.1. For each of these we determine Ggeom exactly, cf. Theorem 9.1. Each of the five primitive irreducible finite subgroups of G2, namely L2(8), U3(3), U3(3).2 = G2(2), L2(7).2 = PGL2(7), L2(13) turns out to occur as ...

Hermite Character Sums

This evaluation proves a conjecture in [9, p. 370] and solves the problem of finding explicitly the number of rational points (mod/?) on the surface z = (x + l)(y + ΐ)(x + y), a problem some algebraic geometers had worked on without success. Character sum analogues of the important formulas for orthogonal polynomials are potentially as useful as those for hypergeometric series, so a systematic ...

Reduction Formulae for Karlsson–minton Type Hypergeometric Functions

We prove a master theorem for hypergeometric functions of Karlsson–Minton type, stating that a very general multilateral U(n) Karlsson–Minton type hypergeometric series may be reduced to a finite sum. This identity contains the Karlsson–Minton summation formula and many of its known generalizations as special cases, and it also implies several “Bailey-type” identities for U(n) hypergeometric se...
